Your Official DA Personnel Photograph

Your DA photo is the FIRST THING
a reviewer sees when he opens your file, and is one of the most important documents considered by a board. It personalizes your file and establishes your first impression in the absence of your physical appearance. Therefore, it warrants your attention and best efforts. Your uniform, awards and qualifications can tell your complete military history...and how well you performed.

Helpful Hints:

  1. Plan and start early! Promotion boards meet the same time each year. (See Links below)
  2. If your uniform does not fit...FIX IT or get a new one! (Cheap investment in your future.)
  3. Officers should conduct a thorough audit of their ORB regularly. Enlisted soldiers should do the same of their DA Form 2 and 2-1. Some awards are linked to a specific tour of duty at a specific location during a specific period of time. Sometimes records clerks do not pick up on a certain award that you should have. Ask questions. (See AR 600-8-22 Military Awards).
  4. Make sure the awards listed on your ORB or Form 2 matches what you are wearing on your uniform for your DA photo.
  5. If you "double book" with the Post Photo Lab and CLICKS Studio, please, please call to cancel one or the other.

 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Official DA photos are not required for WO1's and LT's personnel files...right? By regulation, this is Correct. (It is not required...and neither is it prohibited!)
If you want an "edge" on your classmates, you will have a photo in your file so that any reviewer can have a personal visual link between you to your records.
Digital can remove the wrinkles from my uniform...right? DOD Directive 5040.5, subject: Alteration of Official DoD Imagery, clearly prohibits the alteration of the image. It allows techniques such as color balancing, spotting, and contrast adjustment to be used to achieve the accurate recording of an event or object.
Should I remove my unit crests from my shoulder loops for the picture? They are not "permanently authorized". Absolutely NOT. AR 640-30 para 7. states what will be worn on the class A Army green uniform (for the official photo)"...Basic branch insignia, all permanently authorized awards, decorations, combat and special skill badges, tabs, and if affiliated, regimental insignia will be worn. The shoulder sleeve insignia (patch) and distinctive unit insignia (crests) will be worn and are the only exceptions from the permanent rule." At one time, (before the exception was written) soldiers were removing DUIs and ripping off left shoulder patches for their photos since neither were "permanently authorized."
I wear a Unit Award on my right side. It was issued to me by the supply sergeant when I signed into the unit . Should I wear it for my photo? If you were assigned to the unit when the unit received the award, then yes.
Otherwise, no. (See AR 600-8-22, Chapter 7).
What's wrong with my medals? I set them up just like the picture in the book I bought from the PX. AR 670-1 Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, is your sole authority. There are dozens of books and guides available from AAFES and other commercial vendors that try to simplify or expand AR 670-1. "Most" are good references. "Some" are incorrect. One book on awards has a picture of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal upside down! Other books have mislabeled awards. Stick with the regs!
I was told that all DA photos now have to be digital to meet the new requirements for the boards. Is this true? YES! The Army converted to digital DA photos at an enormous cost. So did CLICKS. The latest instructions from MILPERSCEN requires you to submit 2 hard copy photos through your Personnel Center and electronically transmit one copy (if possible.) The msg expires on Dec 31, 2003, when they hope to have all photos e-mailed.
How many copies of my DA photo do I need? Should I have extra ones printed "just in case?" Officially, two: Your servicing MILPO is supposed to send one copy to your TAGO file and the other to your Career Manager for your field file...which is then forwarded to the board.
Unofficially, four copies. Deliver two as described above, then send the third copy directly to the attention of the President of the selection board. Keep the fourth copy for your own records in case someone in the chain loses your photo. (This is cheap insurance.)
